PTA Tax on Mobile Phones: How It Is Calculated and Paid
PTA tax on mobile phones is the set of duties and taxes that FBR charges when you register an imported phone in PTA's DIRBS system. The amount depends mainly on the phone's value in US dollars and on whether you register on a passport or a CNIC. Rates change with budgets and FBR notifications, so the only reliable figure is the one DIRBS shows you when you apply. This guide explains how the tax is structured and paid.

Who sets the PTA tax
The name is a little misleading. PTA runs the DIRBS registration system, but the duties and taxes themselves are set and assessed by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Pakistan Customs. The DIRBS FAQs say this clearly and tell people to contact FBR with questions about tax amounts.
So when people say 'PTA tax', they mean the customs duty, sales tax and related levies that FBR charges on a phone at the time of DIRBS registration. Once you pay, PTA whitelists the IMEI and the phone works with any Pakistani SIM.

How the tax is structured
FBR places phones into value bands based on their customs value in US dollars. Commonly reported bands are: - Up to 30 dollars - 30 to 100 dollars - 100 to 200 dollars - 200 to 350 dollars - 350 to 500 dollars - Above 500 dollars
Lower bands have been charged fixed rupee amounts, while higher bands include percentage-based sales tax, so the tax rises sharply for flagship phones such as recent iPhones and Galaxy S Ultra models. The customs value is set by FBR for each model and can be revised; news reports in 2026 mentioned FBR revising customs values for some used models. We do not publish exact rupee figures here because they change and unofficial calculators often disagree.
Passport vs CNIC: why the amount differs
The same phone can have two different tax amounts: - Passport registration: for travellers bringing a phone in their baggage, who register within 60 days of arrival using their passport number - CNIC registration: for local buyers registering on their CNIC, with a SIM issued on that CNIC
Passport registration has generally been cheaper than CNIC registration for the same phone. However, it is only for genuine travellers within the allowed window, and the details are checked against FIA travel data. Using someone else's passport for a phone you bought locally is not allowed and we do not recommend it.
The DIRBS FAQs also say there is no rebate for students, government employees or tax filers, and that one person can register up to five devices in a calendar year.
How to find the exact tax for your phone
The most accurate way is to start the registration on DIRBS: - Open the DIRBS website (dirbs.pta.gov.pk) or dial *8484# from your phone - Enter your CNIC or passport details and the phone's IMEI numbers - The system checks the details and generates a PSID showing the exact amount
This amount comes directly from FBR's system, so it beats any online calculator. The PSID is valid for 7 days. If you do not pay in time, the application is deleted automatically and you can apply again later, so checking the amount does not commit you.
How to pay the PTA tax
Once you have the PSID, you pay it at a commercial bank in Pakistan. Many banks also accept FBR PSID payments in their mobile or internet banking apps. After the payment is confirmed, the application status changes from Pending to Approved and the IMEIs are whitelisted in DIRBS.
In the Finance Act 2026-27, the government announced an installment facility for the tax on imported phones, with the procedure to be set by the government. Reports say all installments must be cleared within the financial year. Check DIRBS or FBR for whether this facility is live and how it works before you plan around it.
Is paying the tax worth it?
It depends on how you use the phone: - If you use the phone with your main SIM every day, registering it gives you peace of mind for its whole life - If you use it mainly on Wi-Fi, you may not need to register at all - For expensive flagships, compare the Non PTA price plus tax with the price of official PTA-approved stock before deciding - For budget phones, the tax is usually smaller, so registration is often an easy choice
Many buyers pick a Non PTA iPhone for Wi-Fi use and keep a cheaper registered phone for calls. Our Non PTA iPhone (Non PTA iPhone) page lists current models.
What not to do
You will hear about 'patch' and IMEI-change services that promise SIM use without tax. Avoid them completely. Tampering with an IMEI is treated as an offence under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016, and PTA has blocked millions of devices with duplicate or cloned IMEIs. Such phones can be permanently blocked. The only safe options are to register and pay the tax, or use the phone on Wi-Fi.
