Design
The 16 Pro Max has a titanium frame and a glass back, and comes in Desert, Natural, White and Black Titanium. The 17 Pro Max switches to an aluminium unibody with a full-width camera plateau and Ceramic Shield on the back too, in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver. Both are 6.9 inch phones with IP68; the 17 Pro Max is slightly heavier at about 231 g against 227 g.
Display
Both have a 6.9 inch 120Hz ProMotion OLED with Always-On. The 17 Pro Max is brighter outdoors, up to 3000 nits against 2000 nits, and has Ceramic Shield 2 with better scratch resistance and less glare.
Performance
The A19 Pro with 12GB RAM in the 17 Pro Max is faster than the A18 Pro with 8GB RAM in the 16 Pro Max, and the vapour chamber keeps it cooler in long games. The extra RAM also helps with Apple Intelligence and keeping apps open. Both phones support Apple Intelligence.
Cameras
Both have a 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide. The big change is the telephoto: the 16 Pro Max has a 12MP 5x lens, while the 17 Pro Max has a 48MP 4x lens with an 8x optical-quality crop, giving sharper zoom shots in most cases. The front camera jumps from 12MP to an 18MP Center Stage camera that can take landscape selfies while you hold the phone upright.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the 17 Pro Max at up to 39 hours of video playback (eSIM models) against up to 33 hours for the 16 Pro Max, a clear gain. The 17 Pro Max also charges faster, reaching about 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or stronger adapter, against about 30 minutes for the 16 Pro Max.
