What Is UFS in Mobile? UFS 2.2, 3.1, 4.0, eMMC and RAM Types Explained

UFS (Universal Flash Storage) is the type of storage chip inside most Android phones, and its version decides how fast apps open, games load and files copy. UFS 4.0 and 4.1 are the fastest and used in flagships, UFS 3.1 is the mid-range standard, UFS 2.2 is common on budget phones, and eMMC is the slowest. This guide explains each type, plus RAM types like LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X, in simple words.

What is UFS in mobile?

Every phone has two kinds of memory. RAM is the short-term memory that holds open apps. Storage, the 128GB or 256GB figure on the box, is where apps, photos, videos and WhatsApp media are kept. UFS is a standard for that storage chip, set by the industry body JEDEC.

UFS replaced the older eMMC standard because it can read and write at the same time and moves data much faster. Faster storage means: - Apps and games open quicker - Game maps and textures load faster in PUBG and Call of Duty - Photos save faster in burst mode and 4K video records smoothly - Updates install and files copy in less time

Storage type is rarely printed on the box, and brands sometimes leave it off spec sheets. Check the brand's full spec page or a trusted review for the exact variant you are buying.

UFS versions: 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 4.0 and 4.1

Each version raises the maximum speed. Real phones reach less than the theoretical limits, but the order stays the same: - eMMC 5.1: the old standard, a few hundred MB per second. Found on the cheapest phones. - UFS 2.1: around 800 MB/s to about 1 GB/s read in practice - UFS 2.2: the same read speeds as 2.1, with a feature called WriteBooster that speeds up writing. Common on budget phones from Infinix, Tecno, Redmi and Samsung's Galaxy A line. - UFS 3.0 and 3.1: roughly double the speed of UFS 2.2, with 3.1 adding better write speeds and efficiency. The mid-range standard. - UFS 4.0: roughly double UFS 3.1 again, with reads up to about 4 GB/s, and better power efficiency. Used in most flagships since 2023. - UFS 4.1: a refinement of 4.0 with better reliability and efficiency, in the newest flagships.

Apple does not use UFS. iPhones use Apple's own NVMe-based storage, which is very fast, so the UFS question applies only to Android phones.

UFS 2.2 vs UFS 3.1: is the difference noticeable?

Yes, but less than the numbers suggest. In speed tests, UFS 3.1 is about twice as fast as UFS 2.2. In daily use: - App opening: UFS 3.1 is a little quicker, most noticeable with big apps and games - Game loading: PUBG and other large games load faster on UFS 3.1 - Installing apps and updates: clearly faster on UFS 3.1 - Copying large videos: much faster on UFS 3.1 - WhatsApp, YouTube, browsing: hardly any difference

The chipset and RAM affect smoothness more than storage. A phone with a strong chip and UFS 2.2 can feel faster than a weak chip with UFS 3.1. So treat storage type as a tie-breaker between two similar phones, not the main reason to buy. Budget gaming phones often pair a decent MediaTek Helio or Dimensity chip with UFS 2.2, which is fine for casual gaming.

Which UFS storage is best?

The newest version is always the fastest, so UFS 4.1 and 4.0 are the best you can buy today. But 'best' depends on your use: - Heavy gaming, 4K video recording, large file transfers: UFS 4.0 or 4.1, found on flagships and flagship-killers like Poco F, OnePlus and Realme GT phones - Normal use plus some gaming: UFS 3.1 is plenty - Calls, WhatsApp, social media, YouTube: UFS 2.2 is fine - Avoid eMMC if you can, especially with 64GB storage, as it slows down quickly once full

One catch: some phones use different storage in different variants. For example, several Samsung Galaxy S models have used UFS 3.1 in the 128GB version and UFS 4.0 in 256GB and above. If speed matters, the bigger variant can be faster as well as roomier.

RAM types: LPDDR4X, LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X

RAM type is the other speed spec you will see. LPDDR stands for Low Power Double Data Rate: - LPDDR4X: budget and lower mid-range phones - LPDDR5: upper mid-range and older flagships, faster and more efficient - LPDDR5X and LPDDR5T: current flagships, the fastest and most efficient

The amount of RAM matters too. 6GB is the practical minimum for smooth Android use today, 8GB is comfortable for most people, and 12GB or more helps heavy gamers and multitaskers. Many phones advertise 'extended' or 'virtual' RAM, such as '8GB + 8GB'. That extra part borrows space from storage. It helps keep apps in memory, but it is much slower than real RAM, so compare the physical figure. See 8GB RAM mobiles (8GB RAM Mobiles) and 12GB RAM mobiles (12GB RAM Mobiles).

Storage size: how much do you need?

Speed is one part; space is the other. Phones slow down when storage is nearly full, whatever the UFS version. - 64GB: only for very light users. Android, apps and WhatsApp media fill it fast. - 128GB: enough for most people who back up photos to Google Photos or iCloud - 256GB: best for gamers, video makers and anyone who keeps phones for 3 to 4 years - 512GB and above: heavy 4K video recording and large offline libraries

A memory card slot helps on budget phones, but microSD cards are much slower than UFS, so keep apps and games on internal storage. Flagships rarely have a card slot now. Browse 256GB mobiles (256GB Mobiles).

How to check storage type before you buy

A few ways to find out: - Check the brand's official full specifications page for your exact variant - Read trusted reviews, which often run storage speed tests - After buying, install a storage benchmark app such as AndroBench or CPDT and compare the sequential read speed: roughly under 400 MB/s suggests eMMC, about 800 to 1,000 MB/s UFS 2.x, about 1,500 to 2,000 MB/s UFS 3.x, and above 3,000 MB/s UFS 4.x

You can run that test during our 7-day checking warranty. All our Android phones are Non Custom box pack, and all iPhones are slightly used Non PTA units with 100% battery health.
