What refresh rate actually does
Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws the picture. At 60Hz it updates 60 times a second, and at 120Hz it updates 120 times. The result is smoother scrolling on Facebook and TikTok, smoother animations and, in supported games, smoother movement.
A higher refresh rate uses more battery. That is why many phones switch automatically between rates, and why flagship LTPO screens can drop as low as 1Hz when showing a still image.
Budget 120Hz phones
120Hz is now common even on cheaper phones. The Redmi 14C (Redmi 14C), Infinix Hot 50 (Infinix Hot 50), Infinix Hot 40 Pro (Infinix Hot 40 Pro) and Tecno Spark 20 Pro (Tecno Spark 20 Pro) all have 120Hz LCD screens. They are not as rich as AMOLED, but scrolling feels much smoother than on a 60Hz phone.
If you want 120Hz AMOLED on a budget, look at the Redmi Note 13 (Redmi Note 13), Tecno Camon 30 (Tecno Camon 30) or Infinix Hot 50 Pro+ (Infinix Hot 50 Pro+). Budget lists are on mobiles under 25000 (Under 25k) and mobiles under 30000 (Under 30k).
144Hz and 165Hz: worth it?
For most people, 120Hz is the sweet spot. 144Hz and 165Hz screens matter mainly in games that support those frame rates, and only if the chipset can keep up. The Infinix GT 20 Pro (Infinix GT 20 Pro) and Tecno Camon 30 Pro (Tecno Camon 30 Pro 5G) offer 144Hz AMOLED panels. The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro (Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro) runs at up to 165Hz for serious gamers. See all of them on the gaming phones page (Gaming Phones).
Flagship LTPO screens
Flagships use LTPO 120Hz screens that change refresh rate on the fly, so they save battery without losing smoothness. You get this on the iPhone 16 Pro (iPhone 16 Pro), Galaxy S24 Ultra (Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra), Pixel 9 Pro (Google Pixel 9 Pro) and OnePlus 12 (OnePlus 12). Note that the base iPhone 16 and older non-Pro iPhones stay at 60Hz, while the iPhone 17 (iPhone 17) moved to 120Hz. For the full guide to screen types, see AMOLED mobiles (AMOLED Mobiles).
Other screen specs worth knowing
Refresh rate gets the headlines, but a few more numbers affect how a screen feels: - Touch sampling rate: how often the screen checks for your finger. Higher values, such as 240Hz or more, make gaming taps feel quicker - Peak brightness: important for outdoor use in strong sunlight - PWM dimming frequency: higher values reduce flicker at low brightness, which some people find easier on the eyes - Resolution: Full HD+ is the sweet spot. Some budget 120Hz phones use HD+ panels that look less sharp
Each model page lists the display type, size, resolution and refresh rate, so you can compare these before choosing. If you mostly read and watch video, brightness and resolution may matter more to you than 144Hz.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 120Hz drain the battery faster?
A little. Most phones let you choose 60Hz or an adaptive mode to save power. LTPO flagships manage this automatically and lose very little battery.
Do all games run at 120fps on a 120Hz phone?
No. The game must support high frame rates and the chipset must be strong enough. Many games still cap at 60fps or 90fps on most phones.
Is a 120Hz LCD better than a 90Hz AMOLED?
It depends on what you value. A 120Hz LCD scrolls more smoothly, while a 90Hz AMOLED shows deeper blacks and richer colours. If you can, get 120Hz AMOLED, which is now available on budget phones too.
Kya 120Hz wala mobile gaming ke liye zaroori hai?
Zaroori nahi, magar faida hai. 120Hz se scrolling aur supported games smooth lagti hain. Lekin game ki smoothness zyada tar chipset par depend karti hai, is liye processor bhi zaroor dekhein.
