Factory Unlocked Meaning, and How It Differs from JV and Non PTA
A factory unlocked phone was sold by the manufacturer without any carrier lock, so it accepts SIM cards from any network in the world. It is not the same as Non PTA: 'unlocked' is about carrier locks, while 'PTA' is about registration in Pakistan. A factory unlocked phone can be PTA approved or Non PTA. A JV phone is the opposite of factory unlocked: it is carrier locked and made to work with a chip or trick.

Factory unlocked phone meaning
In countries like the USA, many phones are sold by carriers such as AT&T or Verizon at a discount, locked to that carrier's SIM. A factory unlocked phone skips this. It comes from the manufacturer or an authorised retailer with no lock, so: - Any SIM from any country works, as far as the carrier lock is concerned - It gets software updates straight from Apple, Samsung or Google - No chip, adapter or software trick is needed
On an iPhone, check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock (or Network Provider Lock). 'No SIM restrictions' means the phone is unlocked.
Factory unlocked meaning in Urdu
Factory unlocked ka matlab hai ke phone company ne bina kisi network lock ke becha. Yeh kisi bhi mulk ki kisi bhi SIM ke saath chal sakta hai, aur is mein koi chip ya patch nahi laga hota.
Lekin factory unlocked hone ka matlab PTA approved hona nahi hai. Pakistan mein local SIM hamesha chalane ke liye phone ka IMEI PTA ke DIRBS mein register hona zaroori hai. Factory unlocked Non PTA phone bhi pehle 60 din SIM ke saath chalega, phir PTA tax dena hoga ya Wi-Fi par use karna hoga.
Factory unlocked vs network unlocked
Both can accept any SIM, but they started differently: - Factory unlocked: never locked. Sold unlocked from day one - Network unlocked (carrier unlocked): sold locked to a carrier, then officially unlocked by that carrier after the contract was paid or the conditions were met
An official carrier unlock is permanent on iPhones, because it is recorded on Apple's activation servers. A network unlocked iPhone with 'No SIM restrictions' works like a factory unlocked one.
The risk is when 'unlocked' means something unofficial, such as a chip, a modified SIM or a temporary trick. That is not a real unlock. Ask the seller exactly how the phone was unlocked, and get the answer in writing on the receipt. An honest seller of an officially unlocked phone has nothing to hide, while a seller of a chip-based phone will often avoid the question.
Factory unlocked vs JV
JV is Pakistani market slang for an iPhone that is still carrier locked but made to accept local SIMs with an unofficial chip or software trick. The difference: - Factory unlocked: no lock, no chip, works with any SIM and survives every iOS update - JV: still locked, depends on a chip or trick, can stop working after an iOS update, often has call, eSIM or OTP problems, and carries the risks PTA has warned about
A JV phone can be cheaper, but it is not the same product. Our iPhone JV vs PTA vs Non PTA guide (iPhone JV vs PTA vs Non PTA: What Each Term Really Means) explains this in detail.
Factory unlocked vs Non PTA
These are two separate things that sellers often mix up: - Factory unlocked or locked: about the carrier. Can the phone accept any SIM? - PTA approved or Non PTA: about Pakistan. Is the IMEI registered in DIRBS with tax paid?
So a phone can be: - Factory unlocked and PTA approved: works with any Pakistani SIM permanently - Factory unlocked and Non PTA: works with a Pakistani SIM for 60 days, then needs PTA tax or Wi-Fi use - Carrier locked (JV) and Non PTA: the riskiest combination
If you buy Non PTA, make sure it is factory unlocked, so registering it is all you need. See what is a Non PTA mobile (What Is a Non PTA Mobile? Everything You Should Know).
Non PTA SIM lock means
When people say a Non PTA phone is 'SIM locked', they usually mean one of two things: - PTA blocking: the phone's 60 days are over and the IMEI is not registered, so local SIMs show no signal. This is fixed by registering and paying the PTA tax - Carrier lock: the phone is locked to a foreign carrier and will not accept any other SIM at all, even on day one. This is a JV-type phone and registration alone does not fix it
The quick test: on an iPhone, check Carrier Lock in Settings. On Android, try SIMs from two different networks during the first days. If neither works and the phone asks for a SIM network unlock PIN, it is carrier locked. Our PTA blocked phone guide (PTA Blocked Phone: How to Check and Unblock It Legally) covers the first case.
Is a factory unlocked iPhone original?
Factory unlocked describes the lock status, not whether the phone is genuine. Most factory unlocked iPhones are original international units, but you should still check: - IMEI from *#06# matches Settings and the box - The serial shows the correct model on Apple's Check Coverage page - Parts and Service History in Settings shows no 'Unknown Part' - Face ID, cameras and iCloud work normally
Our how to check iPhone original guide (How to Check if an iPhone Is Original or Fake) walks you through each test. All our phones are factory unlocked with original IMEIs. Android stock is Non Custom box pack, iPhone 16 and 17 units are box pack, and iPhone 11 to 15 units are used Non PTA with 95–99% battery health.
