Size and design
This is the biggest difference. The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3 inch screen and weighs about 211 g, so it is easy to use with one hand. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9 inch screen and weighs about 231 g. Both use an aluminium unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 and IP68 water resistance. Colours: the 18 Pro comes in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy; the 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver.
Display
Both screens are 120Hz ProMotion OLED with Always-On and up to 3000 nits outdoors. The 17 Pro Max simply gives you more space for videos, reading and games. The 18 Pro has a redesigned Dynamic Island that can show three Live Activities.
Performance
The 18 Pro has the A20 Pro, Apple's first 2nm chip, which Apple says is up to 20% faster in CPU and up to 40% faster in graphics than the A19 Pro in the 17 Pro Max. The 18 Pro also has a larger vapour chamber and Apple's C2 modem. In real daily use, both feel very fast, and the A19 Pro has plenty of power for years.
Cameras
Both have a 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide and 48MP 4x telephoto, plus an 18MP front camera. The 18 Pro adds a variable aperture on the main camera (f/1.48 to f/4.0) for better background blur control and sharper group shots. Otherwise photo and video quality is very close.
Battery and charging
The bigger phone wins here. Apple rates the 17 Pro Max at up to 39 hours of video playback (eSIM models) against up to 36 hours for the 18 Pro (eSIM models). Physical SIM versions of both run a little shorter. The 18 Pro charges faster, reaching about 50% in 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, against about 20 minutes with 40W on the 17 Pro Max.
